In preparation for the hottest monthly calendar of 2004, the WesXC men, "Mr. March" Jon Kraus proposed an impromptu beer mile to eccentric celebrity photographer Flojomojo. In need of brews, Kraus accepted cans and a challenge from Dave Lievens, of sworn nemesis inter-athletic squad Nietzsch Factor (ultimate frisbee). The tension resonated deep into the planks of Fayerweather gym basketball courts, where WesXC offshoot The Vlad Squad has schooled Nietzsch side-project Big Erns (and subsequently, Joaquin's Revenge) numerous times. Two of the more subdued warriors from each clan, Kraus and Lievens went toe for toe. What Kraus lacked to Lievens' New Hampshire chug-ability was made up for with swift strides through the packed snow. Things seemed grim when Lievens was 100m in as Kraus finished his final beer, but stripping hat, gloves, and sweatshirt to a single, shining, emerald Emmaus singlet brought new fire. Making up the 100m difference with 150m yet to go, Lievens made a move on the final straightaway. Dazed but instinct and wits intact, Kraus responded and blitzed to the finish, not looking back. A 5 second victory to a storied battle, and a boot of merriment on a steely blue winter night.
