Our third consecutive (4th overall) beer mile was completed on a dark and still night on the Walter Pritchard Track at Hamilton. Highly anticipated, the event fell during finals week. While the organizers thought this might limit participation, it was not the case. As in previous years, entries hovered around the 10 to 15 mark. Spectators numbered in the 40s. While the Hamilton track is not ideally suited to illicit activities like beer miling due to its location adjacent to the campus safety building, who is gonna catch the track team? Race Recap: Downey and Everett got out of the blocks well with Jesse right on their heels. While both Downey and Jesse were experienced competitors, Downey took the first lap out like he was doing an Bellona workout and came into the exchange in a shade over 70 seconds. Jesse was right on his heels hitting the quarter in around 80. As the rest of the field trickled in, it looked like it was going to come down to a three man race between Jesse, Downey and Guiney. Downey rocked out of the 2nd exchange in the lead with Jesse and Guiney glued to his hip like a bumper sticker to a car. Circling the second lap, the frontrunners were already starting to lap the stragglers. The third exhange zone saw a change of lead as Jesse rocketed through his third brew with Downey slightly behind. The third lap saw a classic Hamilton College battle of two members of Team 800 quickly increasing their pace down the back stretch. The two leaders came into the last transition zone fairly even. Jesse proceeded to rifle through his final tasty brew with Guiney, who had fallen back on the third brew, in pursuit. Downey also made a strong go of the final can. As Jesse knew that Guiney had sub 4 1500 meter strength and Downey was also a 1500 meter guy, he knew he had to use his sub 50 400 meter speed to seal the deal. Jesse came across the line in 6:20 to seal 1st place. While his time was off Chris Dunn's time last year, it was still a PR for the outgoing senior. Guiney finished a strong second demonstrating that you don't need to be sober all the time to run a good 1500. Downey completed the podium slots in third. Other highlights included Everett and Kearney running a throwers relay, Becky Mackenzie chundering for the second year in a row, the first brother duo to complete a Hamilton beer mile and the inclusion of many great freshman to carry the torch.
